These services may include but are not limited to those individuals and families that are in need of help with rental and shelter assistance; gas, light, and other utilities assistance; and mortgage payment assistance.

The Homeless and Near-Homeless Aid Program
The Homeless and Near-Homeless Aid Program offers crisis intervention and case management to families or individuals who are experiencing certain one-time emergencies. These emergencies may include but are not limited to natural disasters, fires, or code enforcement or court ordered evictions. Assistance, which is not necessarily financial, may include temporary emergency shelter, transitional shelter, rental assistance and or referrals. These services are coordinated with the Kankakee County Housing Continuum community service providers who combine all available resources to help meet the needs of those clients who qualify.

Family & Community Development Program
Mr. Fritz Cephus began his journey of recovery from alcohol & drug addiction by seeking assistance with KCCSI in 1993. Fritz first step was entering the Concern Citizens United Against Alcoholism (CCUAA) program and the KCCSI Homeless Aid Program.
Currently, Fritz and his wife Terri own a very successful cleaning business, Jack’s Cleaning Service. Deacon Cephus is very involved in his church and other community projects. During 2002-2003, Mr. Cephus is assisting the Gateway Community Development Corporation in rehabbing a former drug haven into affordable senior housing. The Fritz and Terri Cephus family have been working examples of giving back to their community.

Through hard work and dedication, Mr. Cephus overcame his obstacles with the support of KCCSI where he met each week with a Certified Family and Community Development Specialists. Together, they identify long- and short-term goals and the steps that were needed to attain these goals. The family Self Sufficiency Scale was used to prioritize the areas the family needed to address. Some of these areas included employment, income, parenting, education, physical and mental health, subsidence, transportation and housing. As each goal was met the family moved higher on the Self-Sufficiency Scale and closer to self-sufficiency.
